Nice Things. And Monty.

I love having friends round for dinner
For the 1st time ever, the baby was still up when guests arrived. This is him with my friend M watching his favourite show Miniscule. I love it too.
This is my friend J in a new Red Phoenix necklace that old Lotus created at my request.
I luff those colours and the pearls match my earrings. Perfect.
Everyone thinks I never wear neutrals but I sometimes do.
I liked Mary's retro 70s look at the recent Dutch Coronation
And I loved Maxima's blue get up. That cloak was a bit Gwyneth at the Oscars. Luffed it.
And look at all this High End Matching:
Beatrix's Standard Issue Queen Hair is hidden under a big hat but you can tell it's in there.
Isn't she marvellous?
Cute outfits the next day too:
Meanwhile, you know how I love bees and bee motifs 11/10? Well check out the new McQueen stuff at Jean Brown- it is literally covered in bees!
That honey comb pattern's excellent.
Lot's of debate about whether I do more or less than other people in the comments section lately.
I don't know.
I think I do more than some people and less than others. If I had a dishwasher and didn't have to rely on public transport to haul myself to the Coalface and back, I like to think I'd be Unstoppable.
Did anyone watch that doco about Rommel and Monty on the ABC the other night? Talk about fascinating. Turns out old Monty was a fitness fanatic. Who knew?
He famously said "If we can't stay here alive, we'll stay here dead".
Something in that for all of us really.
Speaking of war, Don't forget to watch Free Men- I'm still thinking about it. Seriously, it is the best movie I've seen in ages.
Keep your packing advice coming- I love reading all your insights.
Happy Saturday.

  1. Love the necklace - is it a one-off or will they (hopefully) be including it in the RPE range? Loved the Dutch inauguration - am hoping Queen Maxima will be getting the Stuart tiara out of the mothballs soon. Princess Beatrix seems like such a lovely lady - hope she enjoys her retirement.

Re the comments - you can only do so much - and ultimately there's no way to make everyone happy.

    1. Leigh you are right with your comments re FF but I wonder about making everyone happy. I don't think FF or any of us have to make anyone happy. FF is living her life and giving us all the chance through her blog to be a part of the Glamour. I read this blog because I love reading FFs reflections, love looking at the fashion and decor and love reading the comments! That's it - no competition, no hint of being better or worse than anyone else just FF in all her glory for the bits of her life she wants to share. Long may she continue to let us peek into her Goings On in this way. Love to you and all the FF Faithful, of which I'm one! LJD

    3. Hello! I'm devoted to making my family happy, but the masses will have to fend for themselves! Thank you for your lovely comments. I never feel in competition with anyone. It's funny, but I never ever see my life as glamorous! x

  2. I wonder what a retired queen does? I would think she'll still be very busy queening, retired or not. I loved Mary's retro outfits too. There is something about a long 70s gown that always reminds me of the glamour of Elizabeth Taylor.

Those three little girls in matching clothes takes me back to the 60's my sister and I dressed identically though we never went so far as matching clothes with Mum.

As always love your dark blue sequins

  4. So much to love about this post! You girls look the loveliest and I love that necklace!! I've educated the Year 10s about European Royalty and told them about our Mary, in case they hadn't thought about marrying a Prince. I know I'm being First World but I can't imagine being without the dishwasher, I'm always shoving things in it every which way but loose and jamming it shut for a cycle. Happy Weekend! Xx

    1. I think washing up by hand is just faster...and it uses less water and power.

      I spose I should get one, but I can't be bothered. x

  5. Lovely necklace - love the pastels and the pearls together.

No offence meant but I think it is weird that people worry about whether you do more or less than others. I love seeing everything you do but probably wouldn't worry if it was more or less than everyone else. (Probably because I am too busy doing my own stuff...)

I, for one, hope that you do get the dishwasher and no longer have to rely on public transport because I would love to see you Unstoppable!

The Dutch Royal Family look gorgeous in that deep blue. Love how the little girls frocks are all slightly different in style. Too cute.

  7. My friend gave me her kitchen aid to mind while she is in London for two years. I had hand beaters and they were fine but now I can do other things while it works. Pastry and meringues appear miraculously. About to shove pizza dough on there too.

I got a bike, feel great and get to work quicker but it has meant more outfit organisation. Some of my dresses are just not bike appropriate so sometimes I get changed. I think I freed up half an hour a day though.

  9. Those royal outfits are 11/10. I love the necklace, beautiful colours. I love colour but embrace neutral sometimes, they just go so well with blonde hair. I think we all do more than some people and less than others. I do a lot, but like you I don't sleep that much and love catching up with friends and family. Although this afternoon I dropped everything and enjoyed a nice cup of tea and read the new Frankie magazine. After I'd done the ironing, put it away, made sausage rolls, fed and watered the pets and the kids, grocery shopped and took the kids to the park!

    1. My Saturday seems ages ago but sounds like yours- I walked for an hour with my friend, I cooked pancakes for brekky, I grocery shopped, I baked a fig tart, I did a few loads of wishing and ironing, I read USA Vogue, I watched telly, I gardened, I did a trial pack for my trip, I drove into the Coalface and collected my dry cleaning, I did my nails, I walked again, we had friends to dinner, I crocheted...to me it's a kind of lazy relaxing day. Not all are slow like that, som are frantic! x

And I really love the McQueen bee collaboration...I hope you get a piece from that collection for Mother's Day.

  15. what does it mean? Pope and queen retiring, I think it means people, royal or not, have figured out that life is too short not to keep changing and trying new things. I am loving Martha's new book about keeping on and healthy aging, no retirement in sight for her!

Re trip, when I arrived at my destination recently there was a nice little note inside my suitcase, from some agency or other, informing me that all the contents had been looked at and passed with flying colors.

    2. Dear FF and P
Other options for non-minimalist happy shoppers are: (1) buy an extra bag for the new goodies while you're away - eg in Paris there are a couple of cut price luggage shops not far from Chatelet metro in the Boulevard de Sebastopol, and there would probably be lots in London too. We bought a wonderful strong bright orange Samsonite last year in Paris, so easy to pick out on the carousel; (2) bag up some of the clothes you brought over and send home by post, good also for books (but not too many as there is a weight limit) - the Paris PO has thick cardboard boxes called colisimos that will take quite a lot and they're pretty strong. Not really cheap, but the price includes transport by air. I wouldn't send my favourite heirlooms or Prada jackets (if I had any!), just in case, but we always send things home this way and have never lost anything through the French PO (Italian PO is another story though! Avoid!). Suspect it's cheaper than excess baggage charges, depending on the airline. Now back to the packing. Best wishes and bon voyage, Pamela

Sorry to hear you'll not be wearing your lovely brights and florals. But then lucky you look great in whatever.

  21. Hi FF,

Your dinner with friends looks luffly. Such atmosphere.

OUR Mary really 'frocked' it in the red and the white, didn't she. Maxima's blue cloak was dramatic and glamorous. And those three sisters again, so sweet.

I long for a dishwasher in my kitchen. One day.

    Here's to excellent remaining-hours-of-the-w/end.

  22. What beautiful cutlery.. I have recently acquired Laguiole salad servers and cheese set. Fancy salad servers are just the thing to complement my $3 glass salad bowls from House of KM (ie KMart).

I like how you have mixed and matched plates - lovely colours and contrasts. My settings are so dull by comparison.

How do you do it, I can't so much as rinse a glass without splitting a nail it seems. Your dinner parties always look gorge, food, friends andmthe accessories all beautiful. X

  25. FF I love your blog so much and I read it religiously but have never commented. I started reading in November last year when my baby was born and I started maternity leave. I found it hard to read books when bub was born, especially as she was sleeping in my room and I didn't want to turn the lights on, so I started reading your blog on my iPad in the dark. Your blog got me through many many 2am feeds and I read every single post sort of like a book. You have inspired me to garden, plant succulents and use cuttings, bake, wear sequins, never knowingly undercushion, appreciate motherhood more and hire a fictitious housekeeper. You remind me lots of my sister who is also a blonde lawyer who doesn't have a dishwasher. Love your blog and especially your gardening posts- they are my favourite.

  26. Hope the packing's going well? Excellent dinner party with very good looking food (and guests!). I can't believe you operate without a dishwasher. I loath washing dishes, and would spend my life chained to the sink if I didn't have one. xx
